Two Types of Teledyne MIL-AERO Relays Enter 15th Year Of Continuous Testing Without a Single Failure

HAWTHORNE, Calif. (February 14, 2005) - Teledyne Relays today announced that two types of solid-state relays used in the military and aerospace industries have entered their 15th year of continuous testing, each achieving more than 304 million cycles with no failures.

Teledyne began testing two CD21CD and two HD22CF relays on Aug. 20, 1990. The Series CD - rated up to 2A, 60Vdc - is a ceramic, 6-pin DIP relay that provides optical isolation and short-circuit protection. The Series HD - rated up to 2A, 60 Vdc - is a metal, 14-pin DIP relay that offers true output status feedback and short-circuit protection. Both are hermetically sealed.

The goal is to compare real-life performance with the mean-time-between-failure requirements, according to Antonio Gallegos, product-marketing engineer.

The conditions under which the relays have been tested are as follows:

  • T-ambient = 85°C
  • V-load = 60Vdc
  • I-load = maximum rated load current at 85°C
  • Cycle rate = 1 cycle per second at 50% duty cycle
  • Input V = 5Vdc for "ON" and 0Vdc for "OFF"

These conditions are the maximum specified operating conditions for the relays, with no heat sink and no current derating. Each part has been exposed to these conditions for more than 84,000 hours. The only interruptions have been for testing at every 5 million cycles and calibration every six months.

To date, all parts continue to pass their specification limits, including turn-ON into a short and mechanical short tests. Total accumulated cycles exceed 1.216 billion.

The Series CD measures 0.56 x 0.395 x 0.155 inches (14.22 x 10.03 x 3.94 mm), excluding pins, and weighs 0.07 ounce (2g). The Series HD measures 0.89 x 5.30 x 0.19 inches (22.6 x 13.5 x 4.83 mm), excluding pins, and weighs 0.19 ounce (5.5g).

Teledyne Relays has announced that two mil-aero solid-state relays, the Series CD (left) and Series HD, have achieved more than 304 million cycles with no failures, far exceeding MIL-HDBK-217 MTBF.
